Rhennir fan hyn ychydig o'm hymchwil i farddoniaeth Huw Morys, y mwyaf o feirdd yr ail ganrif ar bymtheg. Gwaith ar y gweill yw'r rhan fwyaf ohono, a'r nod yn y pen draw yw llunio golygiad o holl waith y bardd. Am y tro, mae croeso ichi bori'r hyn sydd ar y wefan a chysylltu i wybod mwy.
I've shared here some of my research into the poetry of Huw Morys, the greatest Welsh poet of the seventeenth century. Most of it is a work in progress, and the ultimate aim is to produce a complete critical edition of his work. For now, feel free to browse what's on the website and get in touch to find out more.

Astudiaeth fanwl o garolau haf yr ail ganrif ar bymtheg o dan saith pennawd: y traddodiad llawysgrifol a llyfryddol a'u diogelodd; amgylchiadau eu canu; y cyfeiriadau a geir ynddynt at ddathliadau eraill ar galan Mai; eu cyswllt â mathau eraill o ganu yn y drws; eu priod fesur; eu halawon; a defnydd hirdymor Huw Morys o'r genre. Mae'r erthygl ar gael ar lein drwy fynediad sefydliadol – clicia ar y botwm isod.

1. Carolau Haf Huw Morys a'i Gyfoeswyr (Mai 2023)
Casgliad bychan o garolau haf Huw Morys a'i gyfoeswyr wedi eu golygu gen i. Math o gerdd oedd carol haf a genid gynt yn nrysau tai gyda'r wawr ar Galan Mai, gyda'r nod o ddathlu'r haf a diolch i Dduw am fendithion y tymor. Roedd Huw'n feistr corn ar y gwaith, a cheir mwy o garolau haf wrth ei enw ef nag wrth enw neb arall. Ond ceir yng ngwaith rhai o'i gyfoeswyr garolau haf difyr iawn, yn cynnwys dwy garol haf ddireidus gan Siôn ab Ifan Grythor, un garol haf swynol iawn gan Siôn Dafydd Laes ac un gan fardd a fu'n llygad-dyst i'r rhew mawr a fu ar afon Tafwys yn y flwyddyn 1684. Trysorau bychain bob un, a'r rhan fwyaf ohonynt heb eu golygu'n iawn erioed. Cyfrol yw hon yng nghyfres wych Yr Hen Lyfrau Bach gan wasg Dalen Newydd.
A small collection of summer carols by Huw Morys and his contemporaries edited by me. A summer carol was a type of poem that used to be sung in the doorways of houses at dawn on May Day, with the aim of celebrating the summer and thanking God for the blessings of the season. Huw was a master of the genre, and there are more summer carols to his name than anyone else's. But in the work of some of his contemporaries there are very entertaining summer carols, including two mischievous summer carols by Siôn ab Ifan Grythor, one very charming summer carol by Siôn Dafydd Laes and one by a poet who was an eyewitness to the frost fair on the Thames in 1684. Small treasures each, and most have never been edited properly until now. This is a volume in the excellent Yr Hen Lyfrau Bach series by Dalen Newydd press. |
2. Erthygl sy'n cynnwys golygiad o gerdd i ofyn crwth (Awst 2023)
Bu'n bleser cyfrannu erthygl ar Huw Morys at y gyfrol hynod hon i ddathlu gyrfa'r Athro Gruffydd Aled Williams. Yn ogystal â golygiad o gerdd gan Huw i ofyn crwth, ceir trafodaeth ar ddechreuadau'r canu caeth newydd – sef dull newydd o ganu cynganeddol ar alawon yr oedd Huw'n feistr arno – yng nghynefin y bardd yn ardal y Rhiwlas ger Dyffryn Ceiriog.
It was a pleasure to contribute an article on Huw Morys to this extraordinary volume to celebrate the career of Professor Gruffydd Aled Williams. As well as an edition of a poem by Huw to request a crowder, the article also explores the beginnings of a new way of composing strict-metre poetry on medolic tunes that was pioneered by Huw in the Rhiwlas area near the Ceiriog Valley. |

Golygiadau newydd a luniwyd ar gyfer noson i ddathlu beirdd Dyffryn Ceiriog yn Neuadd Llanarmon fis Hydref 2023. Canodd Huw'r naill gerdd i wahodd trigolion Cynllaith i yfed cwrw yn nhŷ Rolant y Cobler – 'cwrw cymorth', math o elusen – ac fe ganodd y gerdd arall i ofyn derwen gan Edward Hanmer o blwyf Llanyblodwel ar ran Rhisiart Siamas o Lanarmon. Testunau Cymraeg ochr yn ochr â chyfieithiadau Saesneg.
New critical editions prepared for an evening to celebrate the poets of the Ceiriog Valley at Llanarmon Hall in October 2023. One poem was composed by Huw to invite the residents of Cynllaith to drink beer at Rolant the Cobbler's house – in English, a 'bid-ale', a form of charity – and the other is a poem to request an oak tree from Edward Hanmer of Llanyblodwell parish on behalf of Rhisiart Siamas of Llanarmon. Welsh texts with English translations. |
4. Chwilio am gerddi'r Cyfnod Modern Cynnar (Tachwedd 2023)

Seminar yng nghyfres Adran y Gymraeg ac Astudiaethau Celtaidd, Prifysgol Aberystwyth, lle dangosir bod y Mynegai i Farddoniaeth Gymraeg y Llawysgrifau'n bur anghyflawn o ran cerddi'r Cyfnod Modern Cynnar. Dadleuir o blaid ailgodi'r mynegai ar lein, gan lenwi'r bylchau a'i ehangu fel adnodd allweddol ar gyfer ymchwilwyr yr unfed ganrif ar hugain.
A seminar in the series of the Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies, Aberystwyth University, where it's shown that the Index to the Welsh Poetry of the Manuscripts is incomplete for poems composed in the Early Modern Period. I argue in favor of rebuilding the index online, filling the gaps and expanding it as a key resource for modern researchers. |
